About Me
My name is Michael Ko. I'm a 19 year old Chinese-American-Canadian student of computer science at UBC.
Origins
Born in Memphis, TN on August 30, 1992, I've always had a passion for computers. Since my family first let me near a computer at age 2, I've spent countless hours playing computer games and exploring the ins and outs of the computer. I taught myself to read at 3 years old using Reader Rabbit software. In school I excelled at mathematics, teaching myself multiplication in Kindergarten. I participated in Destination Imagination in 4th grade, our team reaching the state level of the technical/mechanical design challenge before a technical failure forced us to forfeit. During the summers I attended the Appalachian Institute for Creative Learning, where a class in web design ignited the spark of my love for coding and programming. I had discovered my life's aspiration.
After the first semester of 5th grade I moved to Edmonton, Alberta in Canada, where I continued to excel in math in school, participating in the Gauss Mathematics contests in both grades 7 and 8, scoring in the top 25% of my school in grade 7. I got the chance to enroll in computer science 10 at my future high school in February of grade 9. Finishing the entire computer science curriculum before my second year of high school, I proceeded to achieve a perfect score (5) on the computer science AP exam, and participate in the Iverson Computing Science Exam in grades 10 and 11, receiving an Excellent grade on both occasions. When I graduated high school, I received an International Baccalaureate diploma, being the only student in my school to finish all three sciences at the IB level. I earned honors in every grade since 5.
From the time of that first web design class in 1999, I have been obsessed with creating websites and programming applications. I learned HTML (and subsequently, CSS) from designing simple websites and pages for my online profiles, such as MySpace, Xanga and Neopets. When I purchased my own hosting and domain name in 2002, I delved into the world of scripting languages in the form of PHP and Javascript, creating small user databases and management systems, and working my way up to blogs and simple bulletin board systems. From 2004-2007, I worked with Lego Mindstorms and NQC as well as Flash/Actionscript, and learned Game Maker and GML in junior high. In high school I learned procedural C++, and then Java.
Hobbies and Interests
My first passion is and always will be video games. At one time or another, I have owned at least one version of each iteration of the Game Boy and the Pokemon series, the Nintendo systems from the N64 on, a PS1 and a PS3 and an Xbox 360. In high school I sank countless hours into World of Warcraft, proceeding to lead a guild into raiding success in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
I also enjoy creating games; I used programs such as Game Maker and RPG Maker, and later utilized Java to create simple games from scratch. I enjoy building with Legos, and more recently assembling models, especially for the Warhammer tabletop game. I enjoy snowboarding and soccer, and am learning how to cook.
